Thursday

Thursday is the official start of the weekend. Or...The weekend officially starts every thursday. Take your pick. Speaking of which, here are the "picks" from Revolution Room on thursday. And yes, the pun was intended. Corny.

Samantha & Marc
Josh
Nacho
Paul getting dressed up for the occasion. (notice the tuxedo)
The reason for Marc and Samantha mean muggin is because this one guy would just give the ugliest looks to whoever was out on the dancefloor. And for no reason! And the guy was there for at least 45 minutes. I mean usually when you're getting looks like that on the dancefloor, it's because you're going to get called out or someone is going to fight you. But this guy was there for an hour! I don't know if he was really feeling the music or just liking everyone dance and kept his face like that. Here's a joke I couldn't help but telling everyone that night who didn't hear it..."Yo I could not help but laugh everytime I saw that guy's face. He looked so mad the whole night! It's like when you were little and your moms told you "Stop making that face or else it's going to stay that way". Well it looks like his DID get stuck that way!" I'm corny. Jay had another gig so they had DJ Omar spinning in "The Tunnel" at Revolution Room. I had heard of him only by reputation. He obviously lived up to it. He warmed it up with some house for the most part and then threw on some funk at the end. I had a lot of fun as usual. And I'm going to have an even better time tonight at the Limelight.
Yup. Dancelikerobots AND United Bboys in the same night. I wonder if a few members of the band that are apart of our crew will be getting paid double...? Hmmmm. I was informed that we're going to be the filler, so to speak, in between these acts. I don't mind that. Alls I know is that we're getting free admission and better be getting paid like $50 or something. As Cros 1, the man behind Freestyle Session and Out For Fame, said "BBoys need to stop being happy with 50 bucks." He knows what's up. Well...I'll settle for free admission and free drinks. YEAHHHHHHHHH! I hope that you all can make it out tonight.

Beginning of the End

My new favorite funk band. The Beginning of the End came out of the Bahamas and onto the funk scene in 1971 with their hit album "Funky Nassau". The band comprised three brothers, Raphael, Liroy, and Frank Munnings, and Fred Henfield. They were the backbone of the band on the congas, organ, drums, guitars, and vocals. They were accompanied by the Funky Nassau Horns: Neville Sampson, Vernon Mueller, Kenneth Lane, Ralph Munnings, and Freddie Munnings. These Munnings were relatives of the lead Munnings trio.
As I stated, their "Funky Nassau" album was a smash. However, their follow up album, "Beginning of the End", never really got too much play. That's sad considering how good their second album was compared to the first. This band could really get down. Just listening to this band makes you want to be on a beach or an island having a drink. I know I wish I was with this 95 degree weather in September (I hate San Antonio). They have some of the most laid back funk tracks like "Bluestrain"(which has to be one of my all-time favorite songs), "Jamaica", and "When She Made Me Promise". More socially aware songs that many other funk bands/artists released at this time, like "I've Got the News" and "Trip To Nowhere". And of course the uptempo dance tracks such as "Funky Nassau Pts 1 & 2", "Monkey Tamarind", "Come Down" and "That's What I Get". And plenty of instrumentals. All songs with either prominent lyrics and/or stellar composition. You can even here a sample of "When She Made Me Promise" in the beginning of Pete Rock & C.L. Smooth's track "T.R.O.Y. (They Reminisce Over You)". I hope that you can do your best to find these albums or CDs or mp3s online for purchase because these are some of the greats. I'll be more than glad to email you some of these tracks. I even have "Come Down" going on my myspace page. Here's to the start of the weekend!

Revolution Room - 9/20/07

Bringin down the house on yet another thursday. Dancelikerobots made a trip out to Austin to see the band The Sea and Cake, so it was just me and Paul holdin it down on the dancefloor...all night long! And of course, one of the ways that you can keep goin all night long is when the DJ keeps spinnin hit after hit. Thank you J.J. Lopez for continuing to inspire all of us. He started off with the usual dose of house music, but the last 45 minutes of his set was pure murder! It was game over once he put on "Evil Vibrations". I got the names of some artists and attempted to look them up on soulseek but it was to no avail. That's why he's Diggin Deep Quartet. And yes...he dances...

Overdue (Battle of the Alamo)

Long overdue review. The event was at a very nice dance studio with an excellent floor. Paul aka Rockstar decided to be the man of the hour and enter the 1-on-1 bboying, 2-on-2 popping, and the crew-on-crew bboying events. He did good in each one of them. He finished the 1-on-1 with 4 points (will be explained). We, United B-Boys entered the crew-on-crew. We battled this bgirl crew in the first round. I think we all felt that it was going to be an easy victory so we didn't take it seriously enough. But still did enough to make it to the next round. We then battled Havikoro/Vicious Germs in the semifinals. We all could have done better. I did not get a chance to go out. We will work harder/smarter. I liked the 1-on-1 format for the jam. Anyone could sign up, put on a 1-round showcase, and the judges picked the top 7 for the next round. The next round was what's called a "7-to-smoke". The format goes as follows...7 entrants are lined up. So there's 7 seeds, each lined up numerically. Seed #1 battles seed #2. Winner battles seed #3 and so on. Each time an entrant wins a round, they receive a point. First entrant to 7 points wins. Scenario time: Let's say seed #1 wins that battle. #1 now has 1 point. Then battles seed #3 and wins. #1 now has 2 points. Seed #4 defeats #1; #4 now has 1 point. And so on and so on. And once again, the first entrant to 7 points wins. And these rounds are right after each other. The first 7-to-smoke was created in Europe. The original concept was the first entrant to win 7 IN A ROW! That's mad stamina! Now here are some results of the events that mattered...
Results:
Winners of Crew-on-Crew (bboying): Havikoro/Vicious Germs
Winner of 1-on-1 (bboying): Marlon (Havikoro)
Winners of 2-on-2 popping: Jesse Germ and Recon
